I don’t know a lot about gearboxes so excuse my ignorance.

Are the M40 trimatics also know as T300, T350 or T400 or something completely different?

I’m asking because I have a M40 trimatic mated to a 253 V8 and am looking at building a box to handle up to 500hp at the fly for an engine swap that I’ll do later on.

Would I just keep the trimatic and build this box up or should I be looking for another box? If I do need another box, would I need to get a different length tailshaft or are the T350/T400 boxes all the same length?

    Thanks

Will take too long to go through all the differences but in nutshell they are all different boxes.

Really comes down to what you want out of the car, is an overdrive something you would like for example?

All the boxes you have listed can be built to comfortably handle 500 fwhp.

Its always easiest to just build whats already in there.

Not looking to buy just yet. Just trying to plan ahead and figure out what direction to take when I comes to replacing parts.

I’ve heard the trimatics referred to as traumatics as they aren’t very good with handling power. Also looking at a 308 option with the Turbo patter so I can run a T700 with overdrive. That way I can run 3.9 – 4.11 gears and comfortably take it on the highway. But I’ve also heard they’re not as reliable as the T350/T400 boxes with power. I’m not looking at fast quarter mile times. Just a tough and reliable weekend car with enough power to turn the 245 rubber on the rear.

^^ I’m basically selling engine and box combo that your talking about.

    440HP 304 and trimatic.

I ran it will 3.9’s and had zero issues cruising it around the streets. Could turn top gear and ran a best of 12.2@114. 11second combo in an early girl like yours.

Very tempting Cava EFI or Carby?

Like I said I wanted to get the brakes and drive line sorted first but send me a PM with your location and price.

Just fyi a T350 and a T400 are two completely different boxes. T350 is pretty old and is a 3 speed mechanically controlled auto. A T400 is a very tried and true heavy duty 3 speed mechanically controlled auto, very popular with biggish HP cars, its just physically bigger that a T350 so it handles more power/torque.

A T700 is a 4 speed (3 + overdrive) with gear changes controlled mechanically. They then went to electronic controlled gear changes, and the T700 became the 4L60e, 4 being 4 speed, 60 refers to the torque rating of the gearbox, and e stands for electronic. They then uprated it slightly to make it a little more durable and it became the 4L65e. Most parts of a 4l60e/4L65e are interchangeable, externally similar. These days the T700/4L60e/4L65e can be built to handle 500 fwhp comfortably, get up toward 600+ and its starts to become debatable.

A 4L80e is a different box again, and more or less a T400 with an overdrive added. They can be be built to handle pretty good power. Then the latest commies have a totally different box the 6L80e, 6, 6 speed, 80 torque rating, e for electronic control.

Pretty sure all that’s right, if I have stuffed anything let me know and i will update it.

Btw, that combo of Cavas is pretty stout, would be a great buy.

Mines EFI. But I can supply loom and ecu. Could VERY easily convert yours to EFI.

I ran a traumatic from Al’s Race Glides behind a 500hp 355, not a drama in the world. If built right, you’ll have no issues.
