Wondered if any has done or seen this conversion?

Wanted to know if moving steering rack over, custom headers & trans member solves issue of fitment or is there more to it?

Everything engine and box related will be off the shelf bolt in.

The trans however will be another story. I believe they don’t fit the tunnel so to some extent the tunnel will need some mods.

You sure about that Cav, I had an ex cop VL back in the day and it had a T400, they are a pretty big box, but  I guess a 6L80 is longer than the 400?

I believe 6L is a lot bigger and the 4L80 is marginally.

I think I saw a 6L80 in a vp without any mods tho. Can’t remeber where.

Yeah know engine side of it can be done just not seen anyone fit that auto in smaller commo.

Trying to work out if it’s similar to manual cars that keep starter in factory position where they move rack over & custom extractors.

A lot of Elite Fabrication cars were done like that but all manuals.

Size difference from what I read is theyre  tad longer but most of the extra girth is bottom half of auto…not a fan of 4l60/65 having blown 2 up & 4l80 too expensive & seems they’re driven manually.

    Hey guys,

Just planning a new build and am currently looking at fitting a L98 and 6L80e into a VG ute. Any further info on how the box goes as far as clearance in the VN-VS tunnel?

    Cheers, Ace

Hi mate, trouble is there are so many variations of what we have done, to my knowledge none of us on here have gone 6L80, although if I was doing mine again I probably would have (mines a built glide).  I usually don’t like saying stuff I can’t back up, but I believe the 4l80e, is pretty much a 400, with overdrive, so longer.  The tunnel is quite long, so you will probably be OK.  Very keen to see how it goes though.  You building a streeter, will it be engineered?

6l80e fits..issue is cross brace in tunnel hits auto so it needs to be cut/trimmed to clear then strength reinforced back in.

Several cars with 4l80e yet only seen pics of a  vk with 6l80e

Before pandemic was looking at ls3 or 6l/6l80e for vp ute…must admit had been waiting ages for vz 6l/4l65 for ages to pop up.

Still want to do ls conversion but content with 304/4l60e conversion in ute for now.

    Cheers for the replies guys,

I chatted to a guy who does a lot of conversions here in perth and he says it will go in without too much trouble.

Al from kalmaker actually has the same L98 and 6l80e combo in his own VS ute apparently so Im planning to pick up a motor and trans next week and go with that combo.

The car will have to be engineered, as its going to be a full build and is currently an unlicenced rolling shell. It will be a daily driver too so will be doing everything properly. Still just in the planning stage atm and collecting parts but will keep you all informed of the progress and issues as they arise.
